Meriwether Lewis Elementary School in Portland, Oregon, was involved in a legal dispute with Allison Roberts, a local mother, over the school’s gender curriculum. Roberts disapproved of the school’s decision to update its traditional rainbow pride flag to an Intersex-Inclusive Progress variant, aiming to include racial inclusion and transgender rights support.
Roberts discovered that her 11-year-old child received an ‘identity flower’ assignment requiring gender identity discussions with classmates and teachers. After expressing dissatisfaction with the school’s response, she publicly criticized the school’s policies outside the campus.
“Portland Public Schools has and will continue to comply with all laws that serve and protect children.”

Teaming up with the Liberty Justice Center, Roberts took legal action against Portland Public Schools after receiving a one-year trespass order from the campus. The district accused her of harassment and threatening behavior. This order barred her from events, including her child’s graduation.
Before a preliminary injunction hearing, the district made concessions. These included rescinding Roberts’ campus ban, exempting her children from specific LGBTQ2SIA+ curriculum requirements, and reviewing related policies.
Lead attorney Timothy Snowball from the Liberty Justice Center viewed the concessions as a victory, interpreting them as the district’s acknowledgment of unconstitutional actions. Snowball remarked that intensive discussions with a federal judge prompted the district’s change of stance.
A December 1 hearing is scheduled to address policies allowing teachers to withhold certain information from parents. Roberts and her supporters argue that parents have a fundamental right to influence their children’s education and upbringing.
Roberts shared that she received broad support for her actions, both locally and nationally, emphasizing her commitment to protecting parental rights.
