Democratic strategist Adrienne Elrod recently addressed the claims of a Democratic attempt to influence Alaska’s Senate race. She compared it to Republican support for Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s presidential run during the 2024 election. The New York Times reported that Democratic operatives allegedly recruited Dan Sullivan to act as a spoiler against Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan of Alaska, aiming to help Democrat Mary Peltola.
Elrod dismissed the issue on MS NOW, stating, “Some of this stuff happens all the time.” She highlighted how Republicans supported RFK Jr. to draw votes from Joe Biden, noting that such tactics are common in political campaigns.
The New York Times revealed that Democrats allegedly recruited retired teacher Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. to run alongside the incumbent Republican senator. Elrod remarked that voters in Alaska could easily identify the incumbent, ensuring clarity for those supporting Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan.
Peter Alexander of MS NOW pointed out that the strategies used in Alaska were “not illegal” and emphasized that voters were informed about the current senator’s status as incumbent, reducing potential confusion raised by the Trump administration.
As reported, Republicans have expressed concerns over the presence of Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. on Alaska’s rank-choice ballot. The Department of Justice filed a lawsuit to block the election results if the vote split affects the incumbent senator’s chances.
The New York Times outlined a plan in which Mary Peltola’s campaign allegedly sought out individuals named Dan Sullivan to create uncertainty on the ballot. Peltola’s former campaign manager, Elisa Rios, stated that while Peltola was aware, she was not directly involved in the scheme.
The Times detailed efforts by Peltola’s team to enlist candidates to dilute Republican support and boost Democratic chances. Despite these efforts, the Peltola campaign has consistently denied involvement in the controversy surrounding Daniel J. Sullivan Jr.’s candidacy.
