Bulls Showcase Promise in Loss to Knicks

For a long time, the Chicago Bulls awaited a dynamic duo. In Wednesday’s 133-127 defeat to the New York Knicks, Caleb Wilson and Matas Buzelis delivered a glimpse of it. In the second quarter, Jordan Clarkson exploited Buddy Hield’s defensive misstep. Clarkson drove to the basket, but Wilson blocked his attempt, reclaiming the ball for his team. Wilson’s pass to Buzelis set him up for an impressive double-clutch dunk. This marked a turning point for Buzelis, who had struggled at the season’s start.

Wilson has been consistent in the first four games of this season, while Buzelis adapted to new roles in the team’s rotation. Challenges were evident, including Buzelis’ benching during Chicago’s initial win. Frustration was apparent in Wednesday’s game, illustrated by turnovers and missed shots from Buzelis. Yet, the shared moment between Wilson and Buzelis rejuvenated hopes for the Bulls’ future. Wilson scored 20 points, and Buzelis added 17, closing the game together and demonstrating potential.

Matas is my guy on and off the court,’ Wilson noted. ‘I love playing with him. This game was great, and I’m keen to see him improve. It’s a positive step forward.’

Three Key Takeaways from the Loss

1. Bulls Challenge Reigning Champs

Effort is vital to dethrone any team. Early in the second quarter, the Bulls proved this by exerting energy against the Knicks. OG Anunoby and Karl-Anthony Towns fell to the floor, while the Bulls surged down the court. Josh Giddey initiated a fast break, and Buzelis finished with a dunk, prompting a timeout from the Knicks. Despite their fatigue, the Bulls showed determination, taking a lead with Tre Jones’ buzzer-beater at half-time.

2. Knicks’ Comeback

The Bulls’ significant lead dwindled as the Knicks clawed back, exemplifying their experience. Jalen Brunson dominated the fourth quarter with decisive plays, including crossing up Powell and hitting three 3-pointers. Off the bench, Landry Shamet and Jordan Clarkson added six 3s. Offensive rebounds haunted the Bulls, as the Knicks capitalized with six second-chance points, proving crucial in the closing minutes.

Coach Tiago Splitter opted against using a timeout for a structured play when trailing by three. This decision led to a missed opportunity. ‘I thought we could capitalize but it didn’t work,’ Splitter commented with a knowing smile.

3. Bulls’ Shooting Revives

The Bulls’ shooting woes ended against the Knicks. Prior games saw a low 23.8% from deep, but they improved significantly, making 18 of 42 three-pointers. Powell led with four 3s, while Wilson, Buzelis, and Jalen Smith each contributed three. Though such high percentages may not be frequent, this improvement suggests potential beyond their early-season slump. Maintaining proficiency from long range will be essential for ongoing success.
