The collaboration between Mike McDaniel and the Los Angeles Chargers has not gone as anticipated. After six games into the season, the Chargers are still searching for their first win.
The offense has been notably disappointing, leading to increased calls for a change in the offensive play caller. Nevertheless, head coach Jim Harbaugh is maintaining his support for Mike McDaniel. “We’re very confident in Mike and his talent, his work ethic, and his ability,” stated Harbaugh on Wednesday, according to The Athletic. “We continue to be.” Harbaugh noted that the Chargers’ self-evaluation during the bye week influenced this decision.
During the bye in Week 7, the Chargers reflected on their performance, having scored only six points in a Week 6 defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs. Their performance lowered the league-worst scoring average to 15 points per game. Every other NFL team has at least one victory, leaving the Chargers as the sole winless team.
Mike McDaniel, previously with the Miami Dolphins for four seasons, was recruited by Harbaugh. McDaniel is recognized as a strong offensive mind within the league. He views Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert as one of the most talented players he’s encountered.
McDaniel’s impact has been noticeable, particularly in the offseason, as Herbert adjusted his shotgun stance by placing his left foot in front of his right. Herbert focused on improving his footwork and practiced with a green water ball to simulate throws instead of physically throwing the ball.
Despite these efforts, Herbert’s eight interceptions have him tied for the league lead. McDaniel also played a key role in the 2023 Dolphins’ offense, which set a record by scoring 70 points and gaining over 700 yards in a victory over the Denver Broncos. Chantz Martin reports for Fox News Digital.
