President Donald Trump has canceled a planned rally in Kansas on Saturday due to new polling data indicating Republican Sen. Roger Marshall is trailing Democratic challenger Adam Hamilton in their closely watched Senate race. This development was confirmed by Danedri Herbert, chair of the Kansas Republican Party. The rally, scheduled at Salina Regional Airport, reflected Marshall’s increasing pressure as a candidate.
Recent Polling: Hamilton Leading
The latest CNN/SSRS poll, conducted from October 20 to 26, shows Hamilton leading Marshall by four percentage points among likely Kansas voters, with 49% supporting the Democrat and 45% backing the incumbent Republican. These statistics are within the poll’s 4.5-point margin of error, emphasizing the race’s competitiveness. Similar trends were observed in a YouGov survey from late September to early October and a poll by GBAO showing Hamilton’s consistent lead.
An InsiderAdvantage poll conducted earlier in mid-October gave Marshall a narrow one-point advantage, highlighting the fluctuating dynamics in the race. Despite the state’s Republican lean, Marshall has struggled to secure voter confidence for his re-election campaign, with unfavorable views among likely voters.
Trump’s Campaign Efforts and Strategic Changes
Trump’s canceled rally follows his earlier campaign support for Marshall at a Wichita event. Vice President JD Vance has also actively campaigned for Marshall. However, with Marshall trailing Hamilton, the White House aims to deploy a strategy involving 20 tele-rallies across various races to maximize reach before Election Day.
Significance for Senate Control
This Kansas race has national implications for Senate control, with current Republican margins at 53-47, including two independents aligning with Democrats. Democrats need to gain four seats to secure control. Kansas was seen as a Republican stronghold with Trump winning decisively in 2024, yet the contest reflects shifting dynamics.
Marshall’s unfavorable ratings compared to Hamilton’s crossover appeal among Republican-leaning voters challenge traditional party loyalties. Notably, 59% of Hamilton’s supporters are driven by opposition to Marshall rather than support for Hamilton, demonstrating strategic shifts in voter sentiment.
With some likely voters undecided, mostly Republican or Republican-leaning, Marshall has a potential voter base to retain support.
Democrats Eye Opportunities
Kansas is among several states where Democrats perceive increased chances for Senate gains. Polls have given Democrats renewed hope in traditionally Republican areas like Michigan, Texas, and Maine. Texas shows Democratic momentum with Representative James Talarico leading Attorney General Ken Paxton, influenced by Talarico’s diverse voter support.
In Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed leads over Mike Rogers with growing Democratic backing. Maine’s race between Democrat Troy Jackson and Republican Sen. Susan Collins remains tight, testing the incumbent’s ability to maintain support amidst dissatisfaction with the Republican Party.
While leads in polling do not guarantee outcomes, voter sentiment may change before elections, especially with undecided voters influential in the final results.
