St. Charles East’s senior pitcher, Hannah Wulf, delivered an impressive performance, throwing a one-hitter in a 1-0 sectional championship victory against Fremd. Despite not realizing she was pitching a no-hitter until being informed later, Wulf’s efforts were crucial in the win. “I try not to think about a no-hitter while I’m on the mound,” said Wulf, who will attend South Carolina for college. “If I focus too much on it, someone might get a hit.”
Wulf struck out eight batters and dealt with multiple base runners. She hit four and walked two, making her performance far from smooth. However, her determination was evident, especially in tight situations. Coach Jarod Gutesha praised her resilience, highlighting the challenging strike zone both teams faced.
Fremd’s pitcher, Molly Kanupke, also performed well, allowing five hits and three walks with six strikeouts. St. Charles East’s Morgan Beers scored the game’s only run in the sixth inning, supported by a single from Hayden Sujack. The team’s defensive skills shone, with Lexi Majkszak taking control of hard-hit balls in the outfield.
Wulf admitted to some control issues, leading to seven stranded Fremd runners, yet her ability to strike out three batters after conceding a hit showcased her focus and tenacity. “I concentrated on my catcher, Hayden, trusting her game-calling and the infield,” stated Wulf.
Sujack, another South Carolina recruit, recognized Wulf’s inside-pitch strategy as effective, even if it led to several hit batsmen. “Her curveball is tough for right-handers. When she’s on, it’s a game-changer,” Sujack explained.
As St. Charles East looks ahead to their match against Marist, Wulf and her team remain optimistic despite a previous loss. “Marist is a great team, but we believe in our ability to compete,” expressed Wulf, eagerly anticipating the next challenge in their postseason journey.
