In Laos, efforts to find two missing individuals in a flooded cave faced setbacks on Sunday due to heavy rainfall. The search follows the successful rescue of five individuals who were trapped underground for more than a week. Finnish diver Mikko Paasi, who was among the first international rescuers at the site, informed The Associated Press that rising water levels had filled the cave up to its second chamber. This situation has prevented divers from entering until pumps can lower the water level.
The group of seven initially entered the cave last week in pursuit of valuable minerals. A sudden flash flood trapped them inside, with only one member managing to escape and alert the authorities. Rescue teams from Laos have collaborated with personnel from neighboring Thailand to address the situation. Divers from Finland, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia, France, and Australia have also joined the operations.
Some of these rescuers had previously participated in the 2018 Thai rescue mission that saved 12 schoolboys and their coach from a flooded cave. Currently, the rescued men receive medical treatment at a local hospital and are reportedly in good condition, as Malaysian diver Lee Kian Lie confirmed to the AP.
Efforts are underway to locate the remaining two trapped individuals in Xaisomboun. Rescuers have managed to navigate over 200 meters into the cave, identifying five chambers. The five rescued were found in the fifth chamber. Paasi shared insights from the survivors about a narrow crack in this chamber, which might lead to a potential sixth chamber. This discovery provides a glimmer of hope in reaching those still trapped.
“We have yet to explore this potential passage fully,” Paasi said during a video interview. “If we can access it, we might reach the sixth chamber.” The identities of the five rescued individuals – Khamla, Mued, Ee, Ing, and Laen – were confirmed by their first names. The first person exited the cave safely on Friday, navigating a tight, waterlogged path with the aid of an expert diver. The other four exited on Saturday after water levels dropped, allowing them to walk out independently.
Emotional scenes unfolded as the men emerged, with some collapsing at the cave entrance and being embraced by tearful rescuers. Online videos captured these moments, showing the rescued being wrapped in foil blankets, with oxygen masks, and eventually carried out on stretchers.
