Overview of California’s Upcoming Statewide Elections

The focus in California has largely been on the competitive race to replace Gavin Newsom as governor. However, voters will also select various statewide officeholders who will work alongside the new governor in Sacramento. These roles, unlike the governor’s, often entail specific responsibilities and generally lack a large public platform.

The critical work carried out by these officeholders includes investing taxpayer funds, ensuring government accountability, managing elections, and handling insurance issues following major wildfires.

Attorney General
The role of California’s top law enforcement official has gained prominence during the Trump era, as the state challenges federal policies.

State Treasurer
The state treasurer oversees the Pooled Money Investment Account, investing funds for the state government and local entities. This role also distributes bond financing for projects concerning education, infrastructure, environment, or affordable housing.

Secretary of State
Responsible for administering statewide elections, this office provides voter information on ballot measures and candidates, and supervises campaign finances and lobbying activities. Business licensing and filings also fall within its jurisdiction.

State Controller
The controller uses audits and reports to ensure government and other entities are held accountable.

Lieutenant Governor
If the governor dies, resigns, or is removed, the lieutenant governor takes over the role. Additionally, the lieutenant governor is involved in boards overseeing state colleges and universities.

Insurance Commissioner
This position regulates home, auto, and other insurance. Recently, it has been heavily focused on issues related to fires and homeowner insurance.

Schools Superintendent
This official leads the California Department of Education, guiding local school districts and providing partial oversight. The superintendent often uses their platform to address education issues.
