Colombia’s presidential election is heading to a runoff after the first round of voting on Sunday. Abelardo de la Espriella, a candidate aligned with Donald Trump, secured nearly 44 percent of the vote. His opponent, left-leaning senator Iván Cepeda, received just under 41 percent. Neither candidate reached the 50 percent threshold needed for an outright win. The decisive runoff is scheduled for June 21.
De la Espriella, a political outsider with no prior office experience, has gained attention for his alignment with regional right-wing leaders such as Argentina’s Javier Milei and El Salvador’s Nayib Bukele. He has presented himself as a supporter of Trump and has pledged enhanced cooperation with the U.S. He aims to take strong action against organized crime.
Cepeda, on the other hand, is endorsed by Colombia’s current leftist president, Gustavo Petro. Petro has often engaged in online disputes with Trump, particularly regarding U.S. operations targeting alleged drug trafficking vessels.
The Trump administration has treated the Western Hemisphere as part of Washington’s strategic interests. Earlier this year, U.S. forces operated in Venezuela, bringing former leader Nicolás Maduro to the U.S. to face drug trafficking charges. U.S. military actions against suspected drug vessels have been ongoing for nearly nine months in the southern Caribbean and eastern Pacific.
The White House has also increased its military activities near Cuba, maintaining an oil embargo to exert pressure on its communist leadership, alongside conducting joint anti-drug operations in Ecuador.
Furthermore, the Trump administration launched the “Shield of the Americas” initiative. This coalition includes over a dozen center-right and hard-right leaders from Latin America and the Caribbean advocating for politics similar to Trump’s. The U.S. intends to collaborate with these countries to combat illegal immigration, drug trafficking, and foreign involvement in the region.
This is a developing story and more information will be provided as it becomes available.
