Revisiting Health Narratives: Kennedy’s Approach to Personal Responsibility

For many years, the medical community has aimed to reduce stigma. However, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is reintroducing the language of personal responsibility. In a CBS News interview from last year, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., serving as the health secretary, shared a story about health in America. He questioned if society should care for those who make unhealthy lifestyle choices, such as consuming doughnuts or sodas excessively, when they inevitably face severe health issues.

In West Virginia, last March, Mr. Kennedy made headlines when he criticized the governor’s weight, proposing public weigh-ins until the governor shed 30 pounds. He argued that addressing the obesity crisis could be as simple as consuming three balanced meals each day. He also criticized medications like GLP-1s, labeling companies like those producing Ozempic and Wegovy as exploitative.

These comments echo an era when obesity was often viewed as a lack of self-control rather than a complex health issue. Mr. Kennedy’s statements dismiss contemporary ideas of body positivity or the concept of ‘health at every size.’ His words emphasize blame, discipline, and deserved outcomes.

Supporters of Mr. Kennedy view this approach as moral transparency. However, many public health officials see it as a perilous return to outdated beliefs. Allan Brandt, a historian at Harvard Medical School, noted a resurgence of stigmas previously thought to be on the decline.

In recent decades, public health initiatives have shifted away from judgmental messages. Yet, Mr. Kennedy’s stance suggests a reaction against this trend, fostering the belief that empathy has turned into indulgence, overshadowing the role of personal responsibility with societal factors like food deserts.
