Anthropic, an American artificial intelligence (AI) firm established in 2021, has announced a significant step towards an initial public offering (IPO). The company is known for its development of Claude, a notable AI model in the market. On Monday, Anthropic revealed it had ‘confidentially submitted’ a draft registration statement, or Form S-1, to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as part of its IPO preparations.
This filing allows Anthropic the option to go public once the SEC conducts its review. The company noted that the eventual IPO will be contingent on market conditions and other influencing factors. Specific details like the number of shares and their pricing are yet to be determined.
Anthropic’s move joins a wave of potential major IPOs in the tech industry. SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, and OpenAI, the organization behind ChatGPT, are also anticipated to enter public markets. According to analysts at Wedbush Securities, these developments signal a revival in the IPO market, which they describe as having been relatively inactive in recent years. They suggest that these tech giants are competing to reach public markets within the upcoming months.
Currently, Anthropic boasts a staggering valuation of nearly $1 trillion, following its latest fundraising round. This positions it ahead of OpenAI, which was valued at $852 billion as of March. The announcement arrives amidst a period of intense interest and concern regarding AI technologies.
The AI sector has seen increased stock valuations in chip and related companies, buoyed by substantial investments in data centers by firms like Anthropic and OpenAI. Despite these advances, recent surveys indicate that the public remains cautious about AI’s broader implications for everyday life.
