In recent developments at CBS’s top-rated program “60 Minutes,” a significant rift has emerged. Correspondent Scott Pelley has publicly claimed that CBS News head Bari Weiss is undermining the show. He also criticized the new producer, Nick Bilton, for lacking sufficient qualifications. This information arose from a reported recording of a meeting where these concerns were aired.
Pelley’s accusations were made during an introductory session between the “60 Minutes” team and Bilton, who was appointed executive producer by Weiss. This session highlighted tensions following the recent dismissals of Tanya Simon and correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega.
Pelley questioned Bilton’s experience, labeling it as inadequate, and criticized Weiss’s impact on CBS evening programming, referring to it as a failure. The meeting also showed Pelley and Bilton’s disagreement on the show’s direction. Despite Pellley’s claims, Bilton asserted that Weiss values “60 Minutes.”
Pelley insisted, “She’s murdering ‘60 Minutes.’ She does not love this place.”
Attempts to reach Pelley before the meeting were made by Weiss and Bilton, according to a source close to CBS News leadership. The source claimed that the situation was disappointing due to Pelley’s public criticism despite these efforts.
The New York Times reported on the emotional tone of the meeting, mentioning Pelley’s steadfast delivery. An unnamed executive explained that Weiss planned to attend, but was asked to refrain from participating.
Leadership Aims for a New Approach
Only days before the meeting, Weiss circulated a memo describing the need for a shift in approach at “60 Minutes.” Co-signed with CBS News president Tom Cibrowski, the memo emphasized a 21st-century vision for the show. The objective involves integrating “60 Minutes” more broadly across CBS News while maintaining its commitment to ambition, fairness, and fearlessness.
Bilton was introduced as a catalyst for this new vision, deemed to embody the original energy and ambition of the show’s founders. Pelley, supported by staff applause, expressed concern for the recent departures, labeling them as unnecessarily harsh. Bilton, in response, stated he was undeterred by the confrontation.
“I have been a journalist for 25 years, Scott,” Bilton responded. “So you are not going to intimidate me in front of this group of people.”
