Graham Platner, the anticipated Democratic candidate for the Senate in Maine, visited Washington, D.C. amid fresh scrutiny concerning his past conduct. The reception from Senate Democrats was notably guarded.
Platner, an oyster farmer, is challenging Senator Susan Collins, a five-term Republican. He invited the Senate Democratic caucus for a meeting; however, only a handful of senators attended.
Platner also had a private 30-minute meeting with Senator Chuck Schumer, the minority leader. Previously, Schumer endorsed Platner’s primary opponent, who withdrew from the race last month.
Recent reports reveal Platner sent inappropriate messages to women outside his marriage. This caused concern among Democrats about additional undisclosed issues.
Senator Schumer remained noncommittal when queried about Platner’s situation, reiterating that Democrats aim to defeat Collins. He emphasized his support for Platner before moving on from reporters.
