Vanishing Herons: A Mysterious Decline
Black-crowned night herons are facing potential extinction in New York City. Similar to the passenger pigeon’s disappearance, the reasons for this decline remain unclear. These birds, characterized by their size and mostly friendly demeanor, are encountering perilous times.
The herons, known for their muted colors and distinctive white tendrils, have become a staple in several New York neighborhoods. Observations have noted their presence in areas like Harlem, the East River in Queens, and Manhattan’s Lower East Side. They exhibit behaviors that capture the attention of many locals.
Research and Observations
The NYC Bird Alliance, a nonprofit previously identified as NYC Audubon, and other research institutions, including the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Rutgers University, have conducted a study on these birds. The findings indicate a significant risk of the herons disappearing from New York City within the next decade.
While the exact cause of the decline is still uncertain, several factors are under investigation. Toxins in water, shifts due to climate change, human activities, and predators are among the potential contributors, according to the study.
Broader Issues and Statistics
The situation of the black-crowned night herons underscores a broader issue affecting many bird species across North America. Since 1970, an estimated three billion birds have been lost. This decline touches the New York/New Jersey Harbor area, which hosts the largest population of nesting herons and egrets in the Northeast.
Between 2000 and 2022, there was a noticeable 27% decrease in nesting wading birds in the harbor. This drop is primarily attributed to the significant decline in the black-crowned night heron population, which was previously the area’s most common bird.
