In Muscatine, Iowa, residents assembled on a local football field Tuesday evening to remember a mother and five siblings tragically lost in a recent domestic violence incident. Muscatine Police Chief Tony Kies identified the victims: Lisa McFarland, 51; Dakota Whitlow, 32; Austin Harris, 29; Ryle McFarland, 20; Mark McFarland, 16; and Ryan McFarland Jr., 13.

Johnathan McFarland addressed the crowd at the vigil, expressing his deep loss for his mother, sister, brothers, and his father, who, according to police, committed the murders before taking his own life during a police confrontation. He stated, “This might hurt some people for me to say. No matter what is being told to me, I will always love and miss my dad.”
Audrey Perdue, Dakota Whitlow’s fiancĂ©e, also shared her sorrow. She noted his skills as a talented metal worker and lamented the unrealized potential of all the victims. “My heart is broken as I grieve for the loss of my fiance and the life that we had planned together,” she said. “My heart breaks for everyone left behind to grieve these immeasurable losses.”
Four of the victims were discovered at a residence in Muscatine, a city with a population of approximately 24,000, located around 50 miles southeast of Cedar Rapids. Police found McFarland on a local trail, where he took his own life while interacting with officers. The bodies of two other men, believed to be McFarland’s relatives, were found at separate locations in the city; one was discovered in a home, the other in a business establishment.
Chief Kies confirmed McFarland’s criminal history, but details have not been disclosed. James Alan Fox, a criminologist at Northeastern University, noted this incident as the sixth family mass killing in the U.S. this year. A seventh incident near Buffalo, NY, was also recorded recently.
Mass killings are classified as events where four or more individuals are killed within a 24-hour period, excluding the perpetrator. This year has seen a total of 13 mass killings.
