Cease-Fire Agreement’s Fragility in Lebanon Unveiled

The latest cease-fire agreement in Lebanon, brokered by the U.S., faced challenges almost immediately. On Thursday, ongoing Israeli airstrikes and Hezbollah rockets demonstrated the precarious nature of the deal.

The agreement, facilitated by the Trump administration, required Hezbollah to withdraw from the region bordering Israel and halt all attacks. However, it did not demand any immediate action from Israel. Hezbollah was not involved in the negotiations for the cease-fire, leaving Lebanon’s government with limited influence over the group.

Naim Qassem, Hezbollah’s leader, criticized the agreement on Thursday. He stated that it resembled a demand for the group to surrender while Israeli military operations persisted. He emphasized that a cease-fire should include halting Israel’s military actions and withdrawing from occupied territories in Lebanon.

“As long as the occupation continues, the resistance will continue,” Qassem declared.

On the same day, Hezbollah launched rocket and drone attacks against Israeli forces in the border area. Meanwhile, Israeli airstrikes continued in southern Lebanon. This ongoing military engagement highlighted the limited effect of the cease-fire on the ground situation for civilians.
