The primary elections in California have left the state’s prominent political races unresolved. Despite being two days since the vote, the contenders for the November ballots for governor and Los Angeles mayor remain undecided.
In California’s primary election framework, the top two candidates, irrespective of their party affiliation, move forward to the general election. This rule makes the outcome for races such as the governor’s position and Los Angeles mayoral race uncertain as ballot counting continues.
Governor’s Race
Steve Hilton, a former Fox News host running as a Republican, is leading for one of the two spots with about 27% of the counted votes. However, with millions of votes still uncounted, this lead may not hold.
Xavier Becerra, running as a Democrat and a former member of President Biden’s cabinet, follows closely with approximately 26% of counted votes. His position leaves room for potential change as the remaining ballots are tallied.
Additionally, Tom Steyer, a billionaire advocating progressive ideals, remains a strong contender and could advance as more results come in.
Los Angeles Mayor Contest
The competition to challenge current Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is equally competitive, with candidates exemplifying early promise. However, the final decisions rest on the completion of vote counting, which holds the potential for shifts in competition dynamics.
