Understanding Alkaline Water
Bottled alkaline water may include minerals like calcium and magnesium, raising its pH above 7. A level greater than 7 is considered alkaline, while less than 7 is acidic.
Potential Health Claims
Some believe alkaline water can neutralize body acidity. Claims also suggest it could prevent conditions like cancer and stroke or slow bone loss due to added calcium. Mayo Clinic notes these possible benefits but states further research is necessary.
Alkaline water might help with acid reflux and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Studies show some improvement when combined with a Mediterranean diet.
Mayo Clinic emphasized the need for more studies to confirm these claims.
Expert Opinions
Harvard Medical School’s Dr. Howard E. LeWine acknowledges potential temporary benefits but notes little impact on stomach acidity. Large amounts of alkaline water might slightly raise blood pH, but kidneys would rebalance it quickly.
LeWine cautioned against relying on alkaline water for heartburn relief, suggesting antacids as more effective.
Health Risks
Alkaline water can be risky when pH exceeds 9.8. This can lead to high potassium blood levels, known as hyperkalemia, particularly in those with kidney disease.
Robin DeCicco, a holistic nutritionist, pointed out the lack of strong evidence for alkaline water’s long-term benefits. She emphasized that reducing body acidity requires foundational healthy habits like eating less processed foods and more vegetables.
DeCicco advises those with acid reflux to consult a doctor for treatment. Avoid lying down after meals and reduce intake of acidic foods as part of managing symptoms.
