Maine Senate Candidate Graham Platner Faces Criticism and Controversies
Graham Platner, a candidate for the U.S. Senate from Maine, has been embroiled in a series of controversies as he pursues a progressive platform. His campaign messages have included advocating for universal healthcare, wealth taxation, and a Green New Deal. However, his remarks on campaign finance reform sparked controversy. He suggested that billionaires should face jail time for misinterpreting political ads. This comment drew criticism from Republican opponents who noted that significant Platner supporters also receive billionaire funding.
In a speech, Platner stated, “We need to get money out of politics. We need to eliminate Citizens United. If I had control, elections would be brief, publicly funded, and billionaires watching ads wrongly would face jail.” The crowd in Maine responded with applause. During this speech, Platner criticized conservatives, labeling President Donald Trump negatively.
Republicans, like strategist Colin Reed, mocked Platner’s stance, highlighting that his endorsers, such as Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, receive billionaire support. Platner was also labeled by some as having Marxist leanings.
Further controversy surrounds Platner due to accusations from past relationships. Allegations include confinement by Platner of a former girlfriend, Lyndsey Fifield, over ten years ago. Moreover, Platner faced backlash for allegedly exchanging explicit messages on Kik, an anonymous messaging platform, while married. These revelations prompted Republican mockery, with staffers parodying Platner’s reported Kik profile image.
Platner claims the allegations are politically charged. He argues the media chooses personal issues over tackling Maine’s significant concerns. Since these scandals emerged, Platner addressed past views. He apologized for past Reddit comments on sensitive issues and for a tattoo, later identified as a Nazi-related symbol, which he has since covered.
