Trump’s Visit to NBA Finals Game 3: A Mixed Reception and High Security
President Donald Trump attended Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden. As the national anthem played, Trump appeared on the big screen, prompting a mixed response. While some spectators cheered, boos could be heard, especially as Trump saluted the crowd from his suite.
The former president watched the game with his granddaughter Kai Trump by his side. Knicks owner James Dolan was also seated in the suite with Trump.
This reception was notably different from Trump’s appearance at the College Football National Championship. During that event in Florida, the crowd at Hard Rock Stadium enthusiastically cheered when Trump was shown on the Jumbotron surrounded by his grandchildren.
Trump’s presence in New York necessitated substantial security measures. Fences surrounded Madison Square Garden, and law enforcement agencies, including the Secret Service and NYPD, were active. These security efforts led to extended lines and delays for attendees entering the venue.
Additionally, several streets near MSG were closed to both vehicles and pedestrians. The NYPD, in coordination with the Secret Service, decided not to support watch parties outside the arena during Trump’s visit. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated, “We are looking forward to bringing back watch parties for Game 4.” MSG officials, however, noted that the decision to deny permits was made by local city officials.
Trump has been present at numerous major sports events during his second term. These include the Super Bowl in New Orleans, the Daytona 500, and the Ryder Cup.
