Heightened Security Measures for Trump’s Attendance at NBA Finals
Massive security preparations unfolded for Game 3 of the NBA Finals in New York City due to Donald Trump’s scheduled attendance. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries criticized Trump’s visit. Enhanced measures by the NYPD and Secret Service created a “frozen zone” around Madison Square Garden. Fan advisories and a no-bag policy were announced. Former FBI agent James Gagliano discussed these heightened precautions after a recent Penn Station stabbing.
De’Aaron Fox, a San Antonio Spurs player, expressed discontent regarding Trump’s presence. Trump made history as the first sitting president to attend an NBA Finals game, arriving at MSG 40 minutes before the game started. “It’s inconvenient for everybody else,” Fox commented. However, Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson held a different view. During a pre-game press conference, he said, “No, I have not felt any inconvenience. We’ve got a big game tonight, and we’re focusing on playing to our standard.”
Intense security efforts involved Secret Service, TSA, and the NYPD, altering the atmosphere around MSG. A security wall encircled the arena. Fans with tickets faced slow-moving lines due to extra security checks.
Jeffries sharply criticized Trump, saying he “ruined” the Knicks’ first NBA Finals appearance in 27 years. Fox further noted, “We got more security, we have to send stuff early, and our buses are earlier.” Social media showed Spurs star Victor Wembanyama undergoing thorough security screening before entering “The Garden.”
Knicks head coach Mike Brown didn’t comment on the appropriateness of the president attending. However, he shared details about his game-day routine. “I stayed downtown because we were practicing here. It’s a shorter commute than from Westchester County,” he explained.
The security measures extended beyond the arena. U.S. Secret Service agents patrolled the perimeter of a security fence around MSG.
Trump’s attendance at sporting events is not new. He previously attended the Super Bowl in New Orleans, the Daytona 500, and the Ryder Cup during his second term.
