A 30-year-old woman has been seriously injured in a shark attack at Sydney’s Coogee Beach. The incident is the latest in an increasing number of shark encounters along Australia’s coast.
Emergency crews responded quickly on Saturday morning after reports of the attack. The woman was bitten while swimming and was pulled from the water by members of the public who administered first aid before she was airlifted to a hospital. She suffered serious injuries to her arm and leg.
Following the attack, Coogee Beach and two nearby beaches were closed. This incident adds to a series of recent shark attacks reported across Australia.
In a notable incident last week, a 35-year-old fisherman was killed off the coast of Western Australia by a suspected shark, nearly 15 feet long, while spearfishing near Michaelmas Island.
Earlier, on May 24, 39-year-old Michael Jensz died from fatal injuries believed to be inflicted by a bull shark while spearfishing along the Great Barrier Reef. Just days before, another tragic shark attack claimed the life of 38-year-old Steve Mattabonni near Rottnest Island.
Earlier in the year, a 12-year-old lost their life after a shark attack in Sydney Harbour. In January, dozens of beaches were temporarily closed due to four shark attacks over a two-day period. Heavy rain leading to murky waters was thought to have attracted sharks, complicating visibility.
According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, Australia experiences around 20 shark attacks annually. Authorities continue to monitor these events closely.
