Michigan’s Bryce Underwood Faces Scrutiny Amid High Expectations and NIL Deal
The Michigan Wolverines secured the commitment of top 2025 recruit Bryce Underwood, effectively winning the recruitment battle in 2025. However, several college football coaches express doubts about the Wolverines’ decision to invest heavily in the young quarterback.
Underwood signed a Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) agreement valued at around $10 million, providing nearly $3 million annually during his time at Michigan. Despite this lucrative deal, Michigan’s 2025 performance may not have justified the investment. The freshman quarterback from Detroit recorded 2,428 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. He completed 60.3% of his passes while also contributing 392 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 88 carries, leading the Wolverines to a 9-4 season.
A coach preparing to face Underwood shared critical remarks with ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, expressing skepticism regarding Underwood and Michigan’s head coach Kyle Whittingham. The coach criticized Whittingham’s staff for their perceived inability to develop quarterbacks, pointing out that “in 21 years, they haven’t had a quarterback drafted.” He emphasized that paying a player doesn’t guarantee success, suggesting a “reality check” is imminent.
Additionally, a Big Ten defensive coordinator commented on Underwood’s situation, highlighting the pressures the quarterback faces due to his salary. He noted that the substantial expectations stem from his status as a highly-touted recruit, remarking, “We’ve really put a bull’s-eye on a lot of these kids because of the exorbitant amount that they’re paying them.”
Underwood struggled in Michigan’s 27-9 loss to Ohio State, completing 8 of 18 passes for 63 yards and an interception, adding only one rushing yard on six tries. In the Citrus Bowl against Texas, he threw for 199 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions.
Though Underwood’s freshman season may have fallen short, he has the potential to grow into a formidable quarterback in his sophomore year, possibly thriving in Whittingham’s offensive system.
While promising, Underwood’s situation serves as a cautionary tale for programs eager to overpay incoming freshmen based solely on high school achievements. Not all players make a smooth transition to college athletics, and the resources might have been better allocated to more secure portions of the roster.
