Extreme Athlete Andrew Lewis Killed in Utah BASE Jumping Accident

Andrew Lewis, renowned for his performance during a Super Bowl halftime show, died in a tragic accident during a BASE jumping attempt in Utah. Lewis, 39, and another participant, Danny Joe Kregle, lost their lives in the incident.

The accident occurred at Mineral Bottom, a remote canyon area in Grand County, Utah. The local sheriff’s department confirmed the deaths of Lewis and Kregle. Mr. Lewis, hailing from Moab, Utah, gained fame for his feats in extreme sports, especially tightrope walking across challenging landscapes like oceans and waterfalls.

Lewis ran an adventure sports company, BASE Jump Moab, which provided BASE jumping experiences in Utah. BASE jumping involves parachuting from various structures like buildings and cliffs. The acronym BASE stands for buildings, antennas, spans, and earth.

According to Jamison Wiggins, the Grand County sheriff, Lewis and Kregle appeared to be executing a tandem BASE jump at the time of the accident. Kregle died immediately upon impact, while Lewis succumbed to his injuries three hours later despite emergency efforts.

The sheriff’s office is investigating the causes of the incident. It’s unclear how Lewis and Kregle were acquainted. The area where the accident happened lacks cellular service and is challenging to access, taking up to an hour to reach from Moab.
