Partisan Struggles Mar 250th Anniversary Celebrations
Construction is underway on the National Mall for the Great American State Fair, a key part of the celebrations for America’s 250th birthday. President Trump bypassed a congressional commission, forming his own group to organize these events. This decision has led to a celebration marked by division and dissatisfaction among celebrities.
A decade ago, Congress established a bipartisan commission known as America 250. The commission’s role was to organize infrastructure projects, develop educational materials, and coordinate activities for the nation’s anniversary. As July 4 approaches, a separate entity—Freedom 250—headed by President Trump, has assumed control over the marquee events.
Freedom 250 has become the driving force behind Trump’s plans for the anniversary. These plans include building a triumphal arch, a National Garden of American Heroes, and hosting a Great American State Fair on the National Mall. Recently, Freedom 250 even sponsored an Ultimate Fighting Championship event on the White House lawn.
The existence of two distinct groups planning the same celebrations highlights governmental dysfunction and deep partisan divides. What should have been a unifying national moment has become a power struggle, spearheaded by a president ready to overshadow Congress with his vision and personal brand. Congressional Democrats criticize Freedom 250, viewing it as an encroachment on what should be a nonpartisan national celebration.
Representative Bonnie Watson Coleman, a New Jersey Democrat on the America 250 commission, described Freedom 250 as a vanity project driven by what she perceives as the president’s insatiable ego.
