Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, and Joe Burrow have been recognized as the NFL’s ‘Big 4’ quarterbacks over the last five years. Among them, Joe Burrow is the only one yet to claim the NFL MVP title, and he is set on changing that next season.
At 29, Burrow, who was the 2020 No. 1 overall draft pick, is keen on elevating his achievements in the NFL. In a recent appearance on GQ’s ’10 Essentials’ series, Burrow highlighted the significance of a football in his life. “It has brought me many good fortunes in life. I wouldn’t be here talking with you guys without this football,” he remarked, emphasizing his connection to the game and his career. “I can throw it very accurately. Kind of far, not as far as most. I usually keep one in the back of my car, just in case,” he added.
Regarding his objectives for the 2026 season, Burrow stated clearly, “I have all the goals for this season. MVP, Super Bowl, win a lot of games, and have fun.” His past performance includes leading the Bengals to Super Bowl LVI in his second year, although they fell to the Los Angeles Rams. The following year, the Bengals reached the AFC Championship Game but lost to the Kansas City Chiefs, and have struggled to make the playoffs since.
Bengals’ setbacks are partly owing to Burrow’s unexpected injuries and one of the league’s weakest defenses. In 2023, Burrow missed seven games due to a torn ligament in his throwing wrist, necessitating surgery. By 2024, he was back in top form, leading the league with 4,918 yards and 43 touchdowns. Unfortunately, the Bengals ended that season at 9-8, missing the playoffs narrowly. Last season was further challenged by Burrow missing nine games due to severe turf toe, leading to a 6-11 record for the Bengals.
In December, Burrow candidly addressed the impact of his injury-filled seasons in a press conference, expressing how critical enjoyment is to his career. “It certainly doesn’t change my desire to win. If I want to keep doing this, I have to have fun doing it. I’ve been through a lot, and if it’s not fun, then what am I doing it for?” he shared, demonstrating a renewed perspective on his approach to football.
Burrow displayed a more positive outlook during his recent GQ interview. For the full video, see below.
