Nine Norwegian commandos skied across rugged terrain in 1943 to reach the Vemork plant in Rjukan, Norway. This plant produced ‘heavy water,’ essential for Nazi atomic weapons. During World War II, Vemork became crucial to Nazi efforts under physicist Werner Heisenberg.
The Allies sought to destroy Vemork due to its strategic importance to the Nazi nuclear ambitions. The defense of the plant intensified as the Allies’ interest grew.
