Everett Wess Wins Democratic Nomination for Alabama Senate Race

Former Judge Everett Wess secured the Democratic Senate nomination in Alabama, which is traditionally a Republican stronghold. This nomination sets him up to compete for the seat being vacated by Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville, who is running for governor this year.

In the Democratic Senate runoff, Wess defeated small business owner Dakarai Larriett. This was confirmed by the Associated Press on Tuesday night. The initial primary had four candidates, where Wess and Larriett finished first and second. Since neither obtained more than 50% of the votes, both advanced to the runoff election held on Tuesday.

Challenges Ahead for Wess

Wess faces a significant challenge in the general election. The Republican nominee, Rep. Barry Moore, who had the support of former President Donald Trump, defeated former Navy SEAL sniper Jared Hudson in the GOP runoff.

It’s been over thirty years since a Democrat has won a regular Senate election in Alabama, excluding the 2017 special election victory of former Democratic Sen. Doug Jones.

Sen. Tommy Tuberville, previously known for his role as head football coach at Auburn University, is focusing on his gubernatorial campaign instead of seeking Senate reelection.
