Ahmani Hicks remembers her 14-year-old son, Marcus Chatman, as someone who could brighten anyone’s day. Playing for a Dolton area football team, Marcus always had a smile and a joke to share. ‘He would give the shirt off his back,’ Hicks said, highlighting his warm and trusting nature.
Marcus was tragically shot and killed around 11:30 p.m. on June 18 in Chicago’s Auburn Gresham neighborhood. Hicks, who was preparing for his 15th birthday, is now planning a private funeral. Marcus brought joy to his family with his playful antics and love for dancing. His family cherished his calls, often putting him on speaker to share laughter.
The Midwest Hawks Youth Football team, where Marcus played, has been a pillar of support for Hicks and her family. They have provided groceries and companionship, helping her other three sons cope with the loss and encouraging them to continue playing football despite their reluctance.
The football league shared a heartfelt social media post about Marcus, describing the shooting as a senseless act. The post praised Hicks for her dedication to the team, recognizing her commitment to many young athletes. ‘Her love and willingness to serve have shaped our program,’ it stated.
Hicks hopes for justice and closure, as her youngest son seeks updates on the investigation. Chicago police are investigating the shooting, reportedly involving a so-called friend who shot Marcus in the back. Hicks relayed that video footage shows Marcus leaving a building with these individuals.
Marcus’ friends allegedly communicated about the incident in a group chat, which Hicks accessed through his Instagram account. Conversations revealed who shot Marcus, and some friends expressed regret for not helping him.

Hicks has shared warnings with other parents to carefully guide their children, having previously cautioned Marcus about this group. The friends ranged in age from 16 to 20, persuading Marcus towards Job Corps instead of school. Hicks offered heartfelt advice to other parents: ‘Love your children and trust your decisions.’
Marcus’ siblings have struggled with nightmares and emotional distress since his passing. Returning to football practice remains challenging, but the community’s support has been invaluable. The team consistently checks in on Hicks’ family, offering groceries and reassurance.
Hicks plans a balloon release on June 26 to honor Marcus’ birthday. The shooting was one of many over a violent holiday weekend in Chicago, prompting calls from faith leaders and activists for a dedicated Department of Gun Violence Prevention to address the crisis.
