Introduction
Paige Crowder, a 27-year-old mother from Indiana, has taken a remarkable journey filled with challenges and joy upon learning that her son, Levi, would be born with Down syndrome. Since Levi’s birth in January 2025, Crowder has focused on raising awareness and educating others about life with a child born with this condition.
Understanding Down Syndrome
Down syndrome, also known as trisomy 21, is a genetic condition resulting from an extra copy of chromosome 21. It leads to distinct physical features, learning challenges, and behavioral differences. According to the Cleveland Clinic, an estimated 5,700 children are born with Down syndrome each year in the U.S. Many may require lifelong care and face a higher risk of certain health conditions. However, with the right support, they can lead active lives well into adulthood.
Changing Perceptions
Crowder had misconceptions about Down syndrome before Levi’s diagnosis. However, her perspective changed as she learned more, challenging assumptions based solely on hearsay.
“Being Levi’s mom has changed my perspective in ways I never could have anticipated,” Crowder told Newsweek.
Levi’s Personality Beyond Diagnosis
Crowder emphasizes that her son is much more than his diagnosis. She describes Levi as funny, affectionate, determined, and happy—traits that define him as an individual.
Utilizing Social Media
On her Instagram account @paigevictoriacrowder, Crowder shares moments from Levi’s life to highlight his experiences and personality. In one video, she recalls being asked about her pregnancy plans after Levi’s diagnosis. Her response was unwavering: “I’d like to be his mom.”
The video shows Levi enjoying family vacations, photo shoots, and everyday moments filled with love and laughter.
Helping Others Through Her Platform
Crowder aims to help people understand Levi as a child, showcasing his relationships, milestones, and his unique life journey.
“I don’t want people to simply learn about Down syndrome; I want them to actually see what life can look like,” she says.
Crowder remembers the uncertainty and fear she felt upon hearing Levi’s diagnosis. She hopes her story inspires other mothers who may face similar situations, helping them envision a beautiful life for their children.
Treatments and Support
Down syndrome is lifelong, but various treatments can help children thrive. These include physical and speech therapy, early intervention, and special education, among others. Medical management may be necessary for conditions like heart issues, affecting about half of those with Down syndrome.
Life as a Family
For Crowder, daily life with Levi involves routines, milestones, and some chaos typical of families with toddlers. Although Levi has additional needs, Crowder insists these do not define their family or the way they experience life with him.
“There are milestones, routines, messes, cuddles, appointments, laughs, and plenty of chaos,” she said.
Paige Crowder’s journey sheds light on a mother’s dedication to advocacy and education, illustrating that children with Down syndrome can lead fulfilling lives filled with love and happiness.
