A man identified as William Nicholas Love came into the spotlight after a Spider-Man-costumed counterprotester confronted far-right activist Jake Lang. This event occurred during a rally outside Minneapolis City Hall. Videos from the August 22 incident rapidly spread on social media, showing the costumed individual on a pickup truck associated with Lang. Minneapolis Police Department confirmed Love as the person in the costume. He was arrested and booked for alleged assault while wearing the Spider-Man costume.
Social media users praised the masked individual as a “hero.” However, the police replied: “We confirmed who the individual is and that person was arrested for assault, so I don’t know how that’s a hero.”
What Happened at the Minneapolis Rally?
The confrontation took place outside Minneapolis City Hall, where conservative activist Lang, a pardoned January 6 participant, planned a “peaceful freedom of speech rally.” A larger group of counterprotesters gathered. Police were aware of the demonstration weeks in advance and set up barriers around City Hall to separate participants from traffic.
Lang arrived at approximately 11:50 a.m. with six associates in two vehicles. Police noted the vehicles drove onto a sidewalk toward the crowd, leading to a clash. Chemical irritants were deployed, and some officers were struck by thrown objects. Police surrounded and attempted to move the vehicles away from the crowd.
Videos circulating online depict a person in a Spider-Man costume engaging in a confrontation on a truck associated with Lang. The individual was eventually pulled away and arrested by officers.
Who Is William Nicholas Love?
William Nicholas Love, 33, was one of 11 arrested during the City Hall unrest. He was taken into custody for assault on August 22 and released later. Post-incident, fundraising campaigns appeared on platforms like GoFundMe to support Love.
A campaign titled “Support Spider-Man’s Legal Defense” was created by Ash Chudgar, who stated his motives: “I am raising funds for Spider-Man, a Minneapolis antifascist superhero… He taught the Nazi a lesson he will not soon forget.” Chudgar assured funds would go directly to Love. The campaign reached over $32,000.
Another GoFundMe by Keyssy Ayala Castro Figueroa displayed photos of the Spider-Man and Love’s mugshot. This campaign raised over $10,000 and included a message from Love: “I’m known as the Minnesota ‘Spiderman,’ and I’m asking for help after a violent incident.” He explained his actions to protect those around him and addressed his subsequent injury impacting his health and future.
