Justin and Tori Cannarelli from New York have what appears to be a typical family life. They have two children, Cameron and Charlie, and a dog. However, a unique addition to their family is a duck named Louie.
Tori shared with CBS News, “I never expected to own a duck. I never thought he would stay long term.” The Cannarellis initially sought a duck for Justin’s garden center. They found Louie, who had hatched in an elementary school classroom on Long Island, through Facebook Marketplace. Instead of taking Louie to the garden center, Tori brought him home for what was supposed to be a short stay.
Louie’s presence became essential for Barley, the family’s golden retriever. Barley had started experiencing seizures, requiring medication to manage the condition. While the medication stopped the seizures, it took away some of Barley’s spark. “She just lost her spunk,” Tori said. “She lost her goldenness.” Justin added, “We thought this is how she’s going to be for the rest of her life.”
Unexpectedly, a bond developed between Louie and Barley. Their friendship grew, bringing noticeable changes in Barley’s behavior. “She started smiling again,” Tori noted. “She started wagging her tail. She started having personality again.”
Now, Louie and Barley are inseparable. They playfully interact, with Louie pecking and Barley chasing. They spend their days wrestling and relaxing together. While Justin and Tori might never pinpoint what sparked Barley’s transformation, their son Cameron believes, “She wanted to be friends with Louie and hang out with him a lot, so she kind of stretched her joy and fit in with him.”
