A Young Activist’s Journey in Miami
MIAMI — Oscar Alvarez felt a pull towards activism that he couldn’t ignore. As his mother settled in the kitchen and his brother rested after a long beach day, Oscar prepared to engage the community in a different kind of conversation. He packed his tote bag quietly, filled with copies of his socialist zine.
Oscar Alvarez, a young Cuban American, has taken on the significant task of spreading the message of democratic socialism across Miami. Despite his enthusiasm for this political ideology, Oscar finds it challenging to share his views with his family at their kitchen table. For him, promoting these ideas in public is a contrast to discussing them in the intimate setting of his home.
Oscar’s journey brings him to places like the Silver Court mobile home park. There, he participates in weekly meetings, engaging residents in discussions about political ideas and social change. These interactions are vital for Oscar, as they allow him to connect with people from different walks of life, sharing and debating concepts that he believes could shape a better future for everyone.
