Aaron Judge made a significant return to Major League Baseball on Monday, stepping back into the batter’s box at Yankee Stadium after a 96-day absence due to a stress fracture in his rib. His return comes as the Yankees prepare for their series against the Colorado Rockies, marking a crucial moment for the team.
Judge had an opportunity to enjoy some downtime at the U.S. Open, where he watched Coco Gauff progress to the quarterfinals, but his focus remained on baseball. The announcement of his return was met with excitement by fans and teammates alike.
“Having that guy injected into the lineup and playing every day is going to be huge for us,” shared Yankees outfielder Spencer Jones.
Judge’s return rebalances the Yankees’ lineup, which struggled offensively in his absence. Despite missing him since May 31, the Yankees posted a respectable 45-39 record, thanks largely to their pitching, which maintained a 3.24 ERA, the best in MLB since his departure.
As Judge steps back onto the field, his presence is expected to fortify a lineup that has lacked its usual power. The team was leading in home runs up to May 31 but dropped to tenth in home runs thereafter. His impact is also felt in more subtle ways; the Yankees went from being the second-highest scoring team in the first inning to scoring the fewest since June. Players like Ben Rice and Cody Bellinger, who experienced a decline in performance without Judge, stand to benefit the most from his return.
Aaron Boone noted Judge’s importance in offering lineup balance. With him back, especially against right-handed pitchers, the Yankees can avoid overly left-handed lineups, which opponents have exploited.
Apart from his on-field contributions, Judge has remained a vital part of the team off the field, offering insights and leadership. Catcher Austin Wells acknowledged Judge’s scouting reports and leadership, saying these have been invaluable even when he wasn’t playing.
Judge’s return coincides with a critical time for the Yankees, who aim to close the gap in the American League East standings. They trail the first-place Tampa Bay Rays by four games with 19 games left in the season. As Aaron Boone described him as the “best player in the world,” his return could indeed make the difference in the team’s pursuit of the division title.
