PITTSBURGH (AP) – Aaron Rodgers has decided his 22nd season will be his last. The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback declared on Wednesday that he will not return for a 23rd year in the NFL. The 42-year-old did not elaborate on his decision, suggesting that further explanation was unnecessary.
Rodgers thought his NFL journey might end when Steelers coach Mike Tomlin resigned following a significant playoff loss to the Houston Texans in January. During that game, Rodgers lost the ball during a tackle, contributing to the team’s early playoff exit.
However, Rodgers’ plans shifted when Pittsburgh hired Mike McCarthy as head coach. Rodgers had encouraged Steelers General Manager Omar Khan to consider McCarthy. The two share a history from their 13 years together in Green Bay, where they won a Super Bowl and regularly made the playoffs. Their renewed connection in Pittsburgh inspired Rodgers to return for one final season, citing the opportunity to complete his career where upgrades to the team’s offense might end a playoff victory drought.
“It’s surreal,” Rodgers commented after the team’s voluntary organized activities. He described several ‘pinch me’ moments, highlighting his return.
McCarthy isn’t the only familiar face Rodgers encountered in Pittsburgh. Several coaches who worked with Rodgers in Green Bay are now part of the Steelers’ staff, creating a reunion atmosphere.
As Rodgers sat down for meetings, memories of his early career flooded back, recalling his time as a young backup in Green Bay under McCarthy’s leadership. Although older now, Rodgers led the Steelers to a division title last season despite injuries. He aims to end his career on his own terms.
McCarthy praised Rodgers’ abilities and emphasized Rodgers’ role in preparing younger players. The Steelers drafted quarterback Drew Allar and have Will Howard, hoping they can learn from Rodgers. McCarthy regards Rodgers as a valuable resource and sees his mentorship as vital for the team’s future.
“It’s like parenting,” McCarthy noted. Rodgers’ influence is profound, spurring a leap in performance from young players.
Rodgers acknowledges his mentoring role, echoing a phrase he learned from Brett Favre, but his focus remains on winning. His recent decision to play another season aligns with what’s best for both him and the team.
The Steelers’ recent moves, such as trading for wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. and signing running back Rico Dowdle, impress Rodgers. He anticipates improvements in the offensive line, and with established players like Cam Heyward and TJ Watt, he is enthusiastic about the upcoming season’s possibilities.
“I am excited about these guys,” he said. “I’m excited about the team.”
