AAU Basketball Costs Spark Concern Among Parents

AAU basketball parents used to paying high fees for tournaments faced a surprising situation in Ohio over the weekend. Kevin Brandt, a basketball dad from Leipsic, OH, is accustomed to paying prices higher than NBA games to watch his daughter play. He is aware of the business aspect of AAU basketball and the commitment involved.

At the Spooky Nook complex in Hamilton, Brandt encountered unexpected charges. He expressed frustration over the cost of watching his daughter’s games. Brandt noted that he spent $260 for him and his wife to gain entry for the tournament weekend, questioning the fairness of such fees.

Weekend passes, which typically range from $70 to $90, were unavailable at the event. Brandt explained that the family was charged admission for two separate tournaments at the same venue, the Select Events Super Showcase and the Midwest Summer Classic. Each tournament had a $120 admission fee, plus $5 daily parking costs.

The high expenses prompted Brandt’s family to commute the two-and-a-half-hour drive daily instead of staying at local hotels priced at $300 or more per night. Additionally, family members visiting for a day incurred an extra $60.

OutKick contacted Spooky Nook’s senior management for clarification on admission and parking pricing, but received no response. The issue raises broader concerns among AAU parents about the future of tournament costs.

Another AAU parent, Mookie Edmond, shared similar experiences from a tournament in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Although weekend passes were offered at $90, the overall expenditure totaled nearly $1,500 on travel and accommodations. Edmond expressed determination to invest in her child’s sports aspirations, but pondered the sustainability of such financial demands.
