Glenn Close, long regarded as one of the finest actors never to receive an Oscar, will finally be honored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. She, along with director Ridley Scott and animator Floyd Norman, will receive honorary Academy Awards at the Governors Awards, as announced by the Academy.
The Academy praised Close’s exceptional emotional range and ability to bring complex characters to life in their announcement. Since her first nomination in 1983 for “The World According to Garp,” Close has amassed eight nominations. Her notable performances in “Fatal Attraction” and “Hillbilly Elegy” are among these nods. Her eight nominations tie her with Peter O’Toole for the most without a win. Despite this, she has collected numerous prestigious awards, including three Emmys, three Tonys, three Grammys, and three Golden Globes.
The Governors Awards often recognize artists with illustrious careers lacking a competitive Oscar. Ridley Scott, known for films such as “Alien,” “Blade Runner,” and “Gladiator,” has received four nominations without a win. His directorial work in “Thelma & Louise” and “Black Hawk Down” is widely acclaimed.
Floyd Norman, a trailblazing animator, began his career in 1956 as Disney’s first Black animator. His contributions include “Sleeping Beauty,” “Mary Poppins,” “The Jungle Book,” and “Robin Hood.” Later in his career, he worked on projects like “Mulan” and “Toy Story 2.”
The Academy will also present the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award to producers Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler for their creative excellence. They co-founded Killer Films in 1995, producing films like “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” “One Hour Photo,” and “May December.” Their work earned a best picture nomination for “Past Lives” in 2024.
All recipients will be celebrated at a ceremony on November 15 at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Ovation Hollywood. The Governors Awards, a prelude to award season, honor those who have made lasting contributions to motion picture arts and sciences, or rendered outstanding service to the Academy.
