Adam O’Neal, the opinion editor at The Washington Post, announced his departure from the newspaper. He will step down on August 31, having served in the role for approximately one year. O’Neal informed the staff about his decision through a memo acquired by Fox News Digital.
O’Neal noted that he joined The Post to lead the opinion section into a new era. In his memo, he highlighted the significant changes introduced during his tenure. He emphasized the focus on free markets and personal liberties while maintaining a sustainable framework for the opinion section. This approach, according to him, made the section more relevant and accessible, with increased page views and time spent on the site.
The Washington Post’s opinion section underwent considerable transformation under O’Neal’s leadership. He expressed gratitude to key figures like Jeff Bezos and Jeff D’Onofrio, and praised the team for their exceptional work. O’Neal expressed confidence that the section’s future remains promising.
Jeff D’Onofrio, acting CEO and publisher of The Washington Post, acknowledged O’Neal’s contributions. D’Onofrio mentioned that O’Neal improved the section’s balanced perspective and financial sustainability. Plans for a leadership transition are in progress before his exit on August 31.
A source told Fox News Digital that O’Neal’s decision took the leadership by surprise. No tensions existed between him, Jeff Bezos, and Jeff D’Onofrio. In an all-hands meeting with staff, O’Neal described his choice as a personal one, surprising everyone present.
O’Neal joined The Post last July after roles at The Economist and The Wall Street Journal. He was tasked with upholding Bezos’ mission to advocate for personal freedoms and free market principles. This stance drew criticism from within the newsroom and from liberal critics. His predecessor, David Shipley, resigned soon after this directive was issued.
In a September interview with Fox News Digital, O’Neal admitted to feeling responsible for getting the direction right. He acknowledged that most of The Post’s readers are liberal and concentrated in blue states, raising the potential to expand The Post’s reach by engaging diverse viewpoints. His aim was to hire staff from various backgrounds across the U.S. to rebuild trust in The Post, broaden its audience, and address concerns of being underserved by the media.
