Artificial intelligence (AI) is significantly reducing costs in political advertising. Campaigns can now rapidly produce attack ads, memes, and targeted messages that were once too costly.
Campaign operatives use generative AI to create content quickly, a process that previously required extensive time and resources. This shift is transforming political content from a costly asset into an affordable tool, enabling candidates and groups to deliver more messages to voters.
The ad-tracking firm AdImpact noted 29 campaign ads in federal and gubernatorial contests disclosed using AI content recently. The Wesleyan Media Project counted at least 164 AI-influenced ads this cycle, including undisclosed ones.
Using AI for campaign messaging is still being evaluated for its effectiveness in achieving electoral wins. Republican consultant Jesse Hunt emphasizes the cost-effectiveness of AI in political ads.
“AI gives campaigns more tools for less cost,” said Democratic strategist Chris Moyer, pointing to the democratization of resources.
Will Ritter from Poolhouse agency highlighted their transition to incorporating AI in most of their ads. He noted the technology allows efficient ad creation but stressed the importance of understanding the tools.
Campaign veterans argue that using AI in messaging and outreach is crucial. Ciro Riccardi, a campaign adviser for Rep. Mike Lawler in New York, stated they utilize every legitimate tool to enhance productivity.
Despite the increased use of AI, its effectiveness remains debated. A Republican gubernatorial candidate in Massachusetts used an AI-generated ad mimicking the governor’s voice, raising legal questions about AI in elections. While the ad gained attention, the candidate lost in the primary.
In Los Angeles, mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt used AI-generated videos to boost his campaign’s visibility. Though gaining significant online traction, Pratt did not advance to the general election.
AI messaging was also used in Senate races in Texas and Michigan, but its impact remains uncertain with outcomes pending.
Campaign strategists see both opportunities and challenges with AI-generated content. Ritter emphasized success comes from resonant and clear messaging.
Moyer cautioned that AI’s rise may increase voter skepticism about ad authenticity. Hunt highlighted that while AI levels the playing field, authenticity in campaign ads is crucial.
