Junior running back Aiden Brunner understood the importance of patience as he awaited his opportunity with Jacobs. Under coach Brian Zimmerman, the program is known for emphasizing the run game, making it challenging to secure a starting position. Brunner acknowledged this reality, stating, “I knew coming in I wasn’t going to play right away. I knew I was going to have to wait and develop. I talked with ‘Zim’ about it. Now, it’s my chance.”
In a dramatic turnaround, Brunner showcased his talent by scoring two touchdowns in the second half, including the decisive game-winner with just 1.8 seconds remaining. Jacobs erased a 17-point deficit to secure a 31-27 victory against Burlington Central in the Fox Valley Conference. Brunner contributed 38 yards on 11 carries, including touchdowns of 1 and 8 yards.
Austin Stennett played a pivotal role in the comeback, completing 19 out of 31 passes for 263 yards. His 74-yard touchdown pass to Owen Crouch was notable, with Crouch finishing with five receptions for 111 yards. Chris Williams added seven catches for 59 yards and an 8-yard touchdown on a reverse. Jordan Hudson contributed five receptions for 75 yards.
For Burlington Central, Reece Beemer completed 14 of 30 passes for 112 yards and contributed a touchdown. His 10-yard TD run provided the Rockets with a 27-24 lead with 1:06 left in the game. Parker Auxier was impressive, rushing for 126 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries.
Jacobs has not excelled in the run game as in previous seasons, but Stennett’s development at quarterback filled the gap. Coach Zimmerman praised Brunner’s performance, noting, “He’s a guy that’s been waiting in the wings. We told him it was his turn to take the reins. We have a rich tradition of running the ball. We haven’t been satisfied with what we’re doing running the ball, but Austin has made some really big plays.”
Following Burlington Central’s late lead thanks to a 13-play, 68-yard drive, Stennett guided Jacobs within striking distance. Brunner found the gap and sealed the victory with a decisive touchdown. Reflecting on the play, Brunner said, “That play call, we knew we had the power on them, so we were just going to run it down their throat. The line washed their way down and I saw the gap. It was great. All that work I did to develop the past couple years has been wonderful for me. Having the chance to show all the work is just great.”
The Rockets held a notable 20-3 lead following Beemer’s 7-yard touchdown pass to Chace Chesney. However, the momentum shifted after Stennett’s 74-yard touchdown pass to Crouch, sparking Jacobs’ comeback. Brunner further contributed with an 8-yard TD run, reducing the deficit to 20-17. Williams then delivered an 8-yard touchdown, providing Jacobs with a 24-20 lead.
Though the Rockets reclaimed the lead, coach Brian Iossi expressed disappointment over missed opportunities in the red zone during the second quarter. “Quite honestly, we lost that game in the second quarter when we didn’t score three times inside the 20-yard line,” Iossi said. “You have to finish those, but I’m proud of them. I think that’s probably up for one of the best games of the year in the state.”
Jacobs’ coaches emphasized the significance of the game before kick-off. “This is a game you’re going to remember for the rest of your lives,” Brunner recalled. That foresight proved accurate. “I’ve never been a part of something like that,” Brunner shared.
