Alex Bregman’s Determination to Refind his Swing
In May, Chicago Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman faced a challenging period early in the baseball season. He reached out to manager Craig Counsell to explain his struggles with swinging less due to feeling disconnected mechanically. Bregman noted, “When I don’t feel good, I swing less because I know it’s not right.” He aimed to improve his mechanics and waited for the right moment to swing.
Bregman’s approach involved waiting to swing only when his mechanics felt correct. Discussions between Bregman and Counsell highlighted whether he should be more aggressive in at-bats. Counsell understood Bregman’s method, appreciating his clear approach to solving the problem.
In July, Bregman’s efforts began to show results. He achieved a season-best .263 batting average and .825 OPS during the month. From July 27 onwards, he excelled, tying for MLB lead in hits and RBIs, ranking second in slugging and home runs, and third in OPS.
By August, Bregman had improved further, hitting .296 with a .370 on-base percentage and a .972 OPS. He commented, “The start of the year was frustrating, but I feel like this is who I am as a player.” His focus shifted towards resolving mechanics issues to benefit his career long-term.
Bregman emphasizes feeling mechanics when it comes to his swing. He notes that many players rely on observing ball flight, but he prefers internal cues about body movement. His history from prep days in New Mexico, college career at LSU, and time with MLB teams like the Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox demonstrates his commitment to this approach.
Bregman stays true to thinking about mechanics daily at the plate. “I’ve always thought mechanics every day in the box — most people don’t,” Bregman said. His approach involves focusing on one mechanical thought and applying that in games.
Throughout struggles, Bregman remained consistent in his process. Counsell and the Cubs recognized his determination to refind his swing and boost his offensive output. Counsell praised Bregman for maintaining his focus on mechanical accuracy and continuing relentless efforts to regain his form.
“Alex was very consistent in the way he talked about it,” Counsell stated. “He knew what he needed to do mechanically and persisted until he found the feeling he needed.”
Bregman’s dedication exemplifies the process of an intensely committed professional. His journey to fix his swing was time-consuming yet rewarding, showcasing his unwavering resolve.
