Alexander Zverev triumphed over Ben Shelton in the U.S. Open men’s singles final, securing his second Grand Slam victory this year. The match took place on Sunday, marking a significant milestone for the German player after his previous win at the French Open earlier this season.
Competing as the No. 1 seed in a Grand Slam for the first time, Zverev took advantage of Shelton’s nervous start in his first major final. Zverev played an almost perfect tiebreaker on serve, eventually overcoming a spirited comeback attempt from Shelton. The match concluded with scores of 6-3, 7-6 (2), 5-7, 6-2, in front of a supportive crowd showing strong encouragement for the American.
Shelton entered the final after a thrilling semifinal victory over his compatriot Francis Tiafoe. He aspired to become the first American man to capture a major title since Andy Roddick’s U.S. Open win in 2003. Additionally, Shelton made history as the first Black American man to reach the U.S. Open final since Arthur Ashe in 1972.
Despite Shelton’s efforts, Zverev demonstrated his superior form in major tournaments this year. In an unusual moment of confusion, Zverev completed the match on his serve but appeared unaware of his victory, initially retreating behind the baseline. Moments later, he realized the accomplishment and celebrated by raising his arms.
