Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is contemplating a run for president in 2028, tempered by the awareness that success is uncertain. Although she is favored to secure the Democratic nomination according to prediction markets, she acknowledges the hurdles she might face against Republican contenders like Vice President JD Vance.
Polls suggest challenges persist for Ocasio-Cortez that her male peers do not encounter as prominently. Her remarks to the New York Times highlight this: “This country has never elected a female president. Why are we pretending that this is not a factor?” She adds, “That doesn’t make it impossible, but to act as though it’s not a factor in anything ever is really a form of, like, denialism.”
Ocasio-Cortez has not made a definite decision on running, expecting to decide after the midterms.
Prediction Markets and Polls
Ocasio-Cortez currently leads in prediction markets with an 18% chance of winning the Democratic nomination for 2028. Senator Jon Ossoff follows at 16%. Despite being the frontrunner since mid-August, her odds in the presidential race contrast with Vance’s. Polymarket data shows her with a 13% chance of winning the presidential election compared to Vance’s 21%.
Polling averages from Race to the WH show her trailing Vance, with Ocasio-Cortez at 42% to Vance’s 44.9%. Ossoff fares better, leading Vance 48.5% to 43.9%.
In some polls, Ocasio-Cortez also trails Secretary of State Marco Rubio. An Emerson College survey in August echoes these numbers. Quantus Insights recorded Ocasio-Cortez trailing Vance by similar margins.
Demographics and Electoral Challenges
Ocasio-Cortez maintains strong support among women and younger voters, with poll data indicating a lead among women at 48.7% to 37.1%. Among voters aged 18 to 29, she holds a substantial lead over Vance.
However, Vance leads among men and voters aged 65 and older. He also has significant support from voters without a college degree.
Demographic breakdowns show Ocasio-Cortez with strong backing from Black, Hispanic, and Asian voters, while Vance leads with white voters. Urban voters largely favor Ocasio-Cortez.
Reflecting on her prospects, Ocasio-Cortez considers her identity as both a Latina and a woman amidst a politically regressive environment. She stated, “I’m not naïve to the fact that we are living under a very regressive administration, and I happen to be a woman, and I, you know, happen to be Latina. And I think that there’s a lot of conversation about electability, and I don’t kind of shy away from those realities.”
Fundraising and Potential Historic Achievement
As a significant fundraiser, Ocasio-Cortez possesses the capability to generate substantial financial resources. If elected, she would become not only the first female president but also the first to transition directly from the House of Representatives to the presidency in over a century.
