Alleged Vandalism of Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Sparks Controversy

Trump declared these actions as serious crimes against national monuments deserving of lengthy prison sentences. He assured that repairs would commence immediately.
The president remarked further on the alleged damage, citing additional arrests but providing no concrete evidence. As of the publication time, law enforcement agencies, including the Park Police, had not confirmed any arrests.
David Hearn, a Maryland resident and former Olympian, faced charges for damaging government property. Hearn claimed he only touched a dislodged blue piece and rejected the accusation. Trump stated the pool would drain promptly for repairs, portraying the vandalism as an insult to American history.
“What these terrible Vandals have done is a true affront to Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, and should be dealt with accordingly,” Trump commented.
A peeling section of blue coating was visible at the poolside on the same day.
‘A 250-Foot Long Gash’
Trump described physical destruction to the pool’s new lining. He asserted vandals used blades to create a significant gash and poured harmful chemicals into the pool, though he presented no evidence.
The president linked the vandalism to the pool’s recent green hue. However, aquatic experts stated the discoloration resulted from a natural algae bloom, possibly exacerbated by renovation disturbances.
Analyses by a George Mason University professor confirmed the algae was non-toxic.
During cleaning efforts, water flowed into nearby drains.
Renovation Costs and Controversy
In April, Trump announced plans for the pool to appear “American flag blue” in preparation for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. A misleading photo showed him in swimsuits along with administration officials and an unidentified woman in a bikini.
Trump lauded the newly renovated pool.
“The Reflecting Pool was never so beautiful as it was just one week ago, even going back to 1922 when it opened,” stated Trump incorrectly, as the pool opened in 1923.
The renovation’s financial scope expanded from an original $2 million estimate to over $14 million. A Virginia-based contractor received a no-bid contract, while an Ohio firm secured $1.7 million for nanobubble ozone technology to manage the algae.
The Cultural Landscape Foundation sued in May, claiming negligence in historical preservation assessments. A federal judge had not ruled on the lawsuit prior to the administration’s project completion notice.
Neither the discoloration nor the structural destruction described by Trump has been substantiated by the White House.
