Father’s Day often brings a mix of emotions for those who grew up without a father figure. The absence of a father creates a void in a boy’s life. Charles Blow, reflecting on his own experiences, knows the feelings associated with such a void.
Blow’s parents separated when he was five. His father’s presence dwindled due to alcoholism, transforming him into an unpredictable figure who occasionally caused disruption during late-night visits. Despite this, Blow considers himself fortunate. Other men, including grandfathers, uncles, neighbors, and coaches, stepped in to provide guidance, composure, and direction. These influences are crucial in shaping young boys’ lives, offering perspectives only men can provide.
Blow believes all boys in similar circumstances should have access to such support. This belief led him to discover ‘Son of a Saint,’ an organization in New Orleans dedicated to helping boys facing even greater challenges. Founded in 2011 by Bivian ‘Sonny’ Lee III, this organization addresses the needs of boys whose fathers are deceased or incarcerated. Sonny, who lost his own father—a player for the New Orleans Saints—at the age of three, aims to transform the lives of those mirroring his past.
Recently, Blow visited the organization’s headquarters, a community hub in the Bayou St. John neighborhood. The center hosts various classes and meetings, creating an enriching environment for the boys involved. Notably, the boys enjoy cooking classes and wellness sessions. This supportive atmosphere helps boys learn about mental health concepts, free from judgment or traditional masculinity constraints.
Blow spoke with twin brothers, Michael and Robert, aged 16, who joined Son of a Saint after their father’s death three years ago. The brothers enthusiastically recounted their experiences at summer camps in the Northeast, funded by the organization. When asked how they celebrated Father’s Day, most boys mentioned celebrating with their program mentors—men who stepped up to fill the void left by their fathers.
