Andy Halliday, an esteemed actor and playwright, captivated audiences with his vibrant stage presence. Known for his work with Charles Busch’s Theater in Limbo company, he was part of the iconic production ‘Vampire Lesbians of Sodom,’ a significant Off-Broadway success. Halliday passed away on May 5 in Palm Springs, California, at the age of 73 due to complications related to Parkinson’s disease. His sister, Susan Cohen, confirmed his passing.
Paul Rudnick, a playwright and screenwriter, described Halliday as ‘irresistible’ and ‘helplessly funny,’ likening him to comedy legends Carol Burnett and Imogene Coca. Despite his success in comedic roles, Halliday initially saw himself as a dancer. His friendship with Charles Busch began at a New Hampshire theater camp during their teenage years. Together, they performed in ‘Gypsy,’ with Halliday helping Busch perfect a challenging tap routine.
A significant turning point came in 1984 when Charles Busch was unexpectedly offered a two-night engagement at the Limbo Lounge in Manhattan. This opportunity marked the beginnings of ‘Vampire Lesbians of Sodom,’ propelling the Theater in Limbo company, including Halliday, to new heights in the theater world.
