Friday’s game against the Portland Fire presented both achievements and challenges for Atlanta Dream forward Angel Reese. The 24-year-old accomplished a significant milestone, concluding the match with impressive stats: 16 points, 16 rebounds, six assists, and two steals. This performance earns Reese the distinction of being the fastest player in WNBA history to achieve over 1,500 points, 1,000 rebounds, and 250 assists in her career.
Reese’s double-double was noteworthy as she achieved her 28th of the season, tying the record for the most in a single WNBA season with five games left to play. ESPN Insights shared on X, “Reese now has 2 of the 3 highest double-double totals all-time in a single WNBA season.”
However, despite her accomplishments, Reese encountered a setback during the game’s final quarter. She received her eighth technical foul of the season, resulting in an automatic one-game suspension. This suspension means Reese will miss the upcoming match against the Minnesota Lynx unless the league reverses the technical.
With 8:45 left in the game, Reese became involved in an altercation with Carla Leite, a guard for the Fire. Video footage showed Reese approaching Leite from behind and pushing her forward as Dream guard Rhyne Howard scored a corner three-pointer. Reese pushed Leite once more as they separated.
Following the incident, Dream head coach Karl Smesko expressed intentions to appeal the decision, saying, “From my vantage point, it didn’t look like something that was tech worthy.” Smesko hopes for reconsideration after reviewing the film.
Smesko defended Reese’s actions, suggesting the interaction was not deserving of a technical foul. “She’s been really good throughout the season,” he mentioned, affirming Reese’s conduct had generally avoided technical infractions. He remains optimistic that the ruling will be rescinded, enabling Reese to play in the Minnesota game.
