The Los Angeles Angels closed a tough season with a notable defeat against the Seattle Mariners, losing 7-3 at T-Mobile Park. This game marked a historic moment for the Angels, as they experienced their first 100-loss season after 65 years of avoiding this milestone. The Angels were the last Major League Baseball team to have evaded reaching the triple-digit losses, but they now join all other 30 clubs.
First-year manager Kurt Suzuki faced a challenging season, concluding with a record worse than the 63-99 mark set in 2024. The final game held a sense of tension. Star player Mike Trout observed from the dugout, opting for a scheduled rest, while younger team members aimed to prevent the historic loss.
Despite a hopeful 5-4 performance in their last nine games, the Angels couldn’t avoid the 100th defeat. Former Mariner Yusei Kikuchi, now with Los Angeles, started on the mound, allowing three runs over five innings. Although Bryce Teodosio’s sacrifice fly provided some relief, the Mariners quickly increased the score through mistakes and a crucial double by Randy Arozarena. Jose Siri hit a late home run, but the game ended with Dominic Canzone catching Christian Moore’s fly ball.
The Angels underwent significant changes this season. After the June dismissal of GM Perry Minasian, interim GM John Mozeliak revamped the team, trading well-liked players like Taylor Ward and Jo Adell for prospects. This left Suzuki with a younger, less experienced roster.
The season’s end coincides with significant franchise news. Arte Moreno agreed to sell the Angels to Stan Kroenke’s group for a record $4 billion. As the fanbase endures this low point, Kroenke’s history of building championship teams in various sports provides hope and a new direction.
