Anne Hathaway Reveals Decade-Long Struggle with Eye Condition

Anne Hathaway shared details about a serious medical condition she faced for a decade. During her 30s, the 43-year-old actress dealt with being legally blind in one eye due to an early-onset cataract. On The New York Times’ podcast “Popcast,” she discussed her experience.

“This is maybe too much information,” she started. “I was half blind for 10 years.” Her vision deteriorated to the point that she underwent surgery. “I didn’t realize how bad it had gotten until I could finally see the full spectrum,” she said.

Hathaway explained that the condition significantly affected her life, and since her surgery, she has felt more at ease. “I’ve calmed down since then,” she noted. “I didn’t realize it was actually taxing my nervous system.”

According to the Mayo Clinic, a cataract is a clouding of the eye’s lens, making it akin to looking through a frosted window. This clouded vision can make daily activities like reading and driving difficult.

Today, Hathaway regards her improved vision as a “miracle.” “I appreciate vision because I literally feel like every day, I wake up and I get to see the way that I do, it’s a miracle,” she expressed. She reflected on how, two generations ago, her condition might not have been treatable.

Hathaway also addressed plastic surgery rumors, which she usually avoids commenting on. “We’re at a time when people feel very confident in assuming what they think is fact,” she stated, addressing speculation about her appearance.

Despite usually refraining from giving such rumors attention, she felt compelled to clarify: “I didn’t make a huge medical decision. It’s just two braids.” However, she admitted contemplating cosmetic procedures in the future.
