Antonio Banks of Marian Catholic is recognized for his dynamic play. Every time he scores with a long run or turns a short pass into a significant touchdown, he remains unsatisfied and keeps pushing for more. As both a running back and defensive back, Banks shows no signs of slowing down. He draws his energy from a distinct source.
“Just thinking about my team more than myself,” Banks explained. His focus is on enabling his teammates—especially fellow seniors—to play in high-stakes games and reach new venues like the playoffs. “It’s bigger than myself,” he added.
On Saturday afternoon, Banks gave his all for the Spartans as they aimed for their first playoff berth since 2019. Banks caught 13 passes totaling 226 yards and scored two touchdowns. However, Marian Catholic faced a slow start and lost 30-21 to St. Viator at Forest View Stadium in Arlington Heights.
Banks also carried the ball for 46 yards on 13 attempts. Freshman quarterback Caleb Wilson succeeded in 21 of 36 passes, accumulating 303 yards and three touchdowns for the Spartans, who ended with a 2-4 record for the season and a 1-1 mark in the league. Andrew Goers contributed with a 9-yard touchdown catch, and Nathaniyl Pindur led the defense with two sacks and tackles resulting in loss.
Both Banks’ receiving yardage and Wilson’s passing yardage set new single-game records for the Spartans. Wilson expressed how vital Banks is for him as he navigates his role as a starting varsity quarterback. “It’s really easy to play with him,” Wilson stated. He often relies on Banks when nothing else is available, allowing plays to end either in a first down or touchdown.
During the game, Jax Baker spearheaded St. Viator with two touchdown catches, quickly propelling the Lions to a 16-0 lead within the initial eight minutes. By the closing moments of the first half, they were ahead 23-7. Banks caught a deep throw from Wilson approximately 40 yards out and raced for a 70-yard touchdown. Wilson subsequently made a 2-point conversion pass to Banks, narrowing the score to 23-15 at halftime.
In a fitting display of determination, Banks described the moment as a crucial uplift in team morale for a comeback. “I knew we needed some motivation,” Banks acknowledged. Observing his quarterback rolling out, he ran toward open space, grasped an excellent pass, and scored with fine blocking support.
Banks showcased his ability further with a 55-yard touchdown catch and several defensive tackles. Marian Catholic’s coach Nick Lopez publicly appreciated Banks’ relentless effort. “Tony’s been pouring everything out on the field. His energy feeds into his teammates,” Lopez remarked. Highlighting his multifaceted contributions across offense, defense, and special teams, Lopez praised Banks’ incredible spirit and tenacity.
Marian Catholic remains in the playoff race if they secure two wins and a preferable third. Upcoming games against Nazareth, Providence, and a potentially decisive match against Leo in Week 9 loom ahead. Undeterred, Banks accepts the test.
Reflecting on elevating his team’s profile, Banks declared, “It’s a big chance to put my teammates on a bigger platform.” Demonstrating his prowess since first picking up a football in seventh grade, Banks shared his path from baseball to football. His debut play confirmed his talents with an unforgettable 90-yard run.
